MyFitnessPal review, free features, paid tools and food data
MyFitnessPal is a nutrition tracking app with Free, Premium and Premium+ plans. Its food diary, calorie tracking and database remain free, while Barcode Scanner, Meal Scan and Voice Log require Premium. We see its strongest free offering in the combination of food records, macros and custom recipes, with payment mainly changing how food goes in and how much control the diary offers.
The free diary still covers more than calories
The plan table, edited September 1, 2026, now contains 33 feature rows, with 8 ticked for Free. These are MyFitnessPal's names, with and written out.
- Food and Exercise Logging
- Log Measurements and View past Progress
- Create Foods, Meals and Recipes
- View Macronutrients
- Customize Calorie and Macro Goals by Percentage
- Ability to share and View your diary with others
- Linking to Partner Apps
- Printable Report
The free-version article, edited October 29, 2025, limits the printable report to the website and describes macro goals in five percent increments. The logging instructions, edited September 23, 2026, confirm that adding food is free, while timestamps and logging the same food across multiple days are Premium extras.
Free access comes with advertising. Both the App Store and Google Play disclose ads, and Ad free is a Premium feature.
The camera and microphone come with conditions
| Tool | What MyFitnessPal help says | Plan | Help article and dates |
|---|---|---|---|
| Barcode Scanner | Uses a rear camera to find packaged food. Available in the iOS and Android apps, not the website. | Premium since October 1, 2022 | Barcode instructions, edited September 3, 2026, read October 7, 2026 |
| Meal Scan | Suggests verified database foods from a photo. Suggestions can be wrong and remain for the user to check. Requires iOS 18 or Android 13 and above, app version 22.17 or newer, and English. Unavailable on the website. | Premium | Meal Scanner instructions, edited September 16, 2026, read October 7, 2026 |
| Voice Log | Searches the same database as typing. Requires English and app version 24.35.0 or higher on iOS or Android. No website support. Cannot log saved My Foods, My Recipes or My Meals, Quick Add entries, weight, exercise or water. | Premium | Voice logging instructions, edited September 14, 2026, read October 7, 2026 |
Voice Log has no row in the tier table, although both the Premium features article and Premium+ help page include it among Premium tools. For another app that starts a log from a photo, see our Foodvisor review.
Premium prices are easier to find than Premium+ prices
The published US dollar amounts checked October 7, 2026 are below.
| Plan | Monthly | Yearly | Where shown |
|---|---|---|---|
| Premium | $19.99 | $79.99 | MyFitnessPal Premium page and App Store purchase list |
| Premium+ | $24.99 | $99.99 | MyFitnessPal membership blog post, published April 9, 2025 and modified October 8, 2025. Neither the Premium page nor the App Store purchase list gives a Premium+ price. |
Premium offers a 7-day trial for people who have never had Premium or a Premium trial, followed by an automatically renewing subscription unless canceled. The App Store also shows Premium purchases at $9.99 and $49.99 without explaining who receives those offers. Premium+ is sold in six countries, the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and Australia, and its features work only in the iOS and Android apps, with more billing detail in our MyFitnessPal Premium cost guide.
A shared food catalog needs more than a check mark
MyFitnessPal and its users both contribute food entries. A new custom food normally stays in that account's My Foods tab and searches, but the website lets its creator share it with everyone. The same help page explains how creating a food for a missing barcode links it to that code for all users. The barcode instructions acknowledge gaps for newer and regional products in this community-built database.
A check mark means MyFitnessPal reviewed or added the food and considers its information accurate and complete. The company says it uses several tools and resources in that review. It also says marked entries can contain mistakes and unmarked entries can be right. We find the mark useful as a record of review, but those stated limits make it insufficient evidence that every nutrient in an entry is correct.
Study results depend on how the food was recorded
Evenepoel and colleagues in 2020 compared MyFitnessPal records from 50 participants with the Belgian Nubel database, finding strong correlations for energy, macros, sugar and fiber after removing implausible values, but weak correlations for sodium and cholesterol. Chen and colleagues in 2019 compared independent logging by 43 adults with dietary recalls, finding that participants left out a mean of 18% of food items and that recorded energy and all macronutrients were underestimated. Diktas and colleagues in 2025 trained 44 participants and supplied preweighed foods, finding MyFitnessPal energy estimates equivalent to weighed intake within the study's bounds, with mean percent error of 3.7%. These abstract findings differ across cleaned records, trained participants with provided food and people logging on their own, as explored in our full review of MyFitnessPal accuracy studies.
Francisco Partners and a year of new features
Francisco Partners announced its agreement to buy MyFitnessPal from Under Armour on October 30, 2020, at a transaction value of $345 million including potential earn-out payments. It lists MyFitnessPal as a current investment. The MyFitnessPal pages checked for this review, including its homepage, did not name the owner.
- February 24, 2026, Winter Release. Meal Scan Photo Upload lets Premium and Premium+ members on iOS take a meal photo immediately or upload it later.
- March 2, 2026, Cal AI acquisition. MyFitnessPal announced buying Cal AI and said it would keep operating as a standalone product. The announcement dates the Intent acquisition only to last year and the ChatGPT Health integration to January. Our Cal AI accuracy review and Cal AI and MyFitnessPal comparison cover the separate apps.
- March 17, 2026, MyFitnessPal Ads. The company launched an advertising media network.
- June 10, 2026, AI Coach. MyFitnessPal introduced guidance based on what a member has logged. Its Coach help article, edited June 11, 2026, says availability is limited to Premium and Premium+ members on iOS in English, in the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Coach cannot log food for you.
- August 25, 2026, Summer Release. The release describes AI Coach suggestions drawn from logging history for paid members on iOS, and a Plan Tab with recipes and one-tap logging for all members.

What the subscription changes in a daily diary
Our assessment starts with the free macro view and percentage goals. They give Free a useful role beyond simply adding calories, and custom recipes and partner connections add ways to keep familiar information together. Premium's clearest benefit is access to camera and voice entry, while Premium+ makes a separate case through meal planning and groceries.
The limits are concrete. Voice Log cannot use saved foods or meals, which narrows its usefulness for repeated entries. Meal Scan still needs a person to judge its suggestions, and the database's own check marks allow for mistakes. We would judge the paid plans by those specific tools, without treating a subscription as assurance of correct food numbers.
TrueCal separates manual calories from Pro logging
TrueCal keeps manual calorie entry and calorie viewing free. Pro turns a typed description, voice, a photo or a barcode into a food log with calories and macros, and macros require Pro. Every nutrition number must come from a source or the user. Named sources include USDA FoodData Central, FatSecret, Open Food Facts, and published restaurant and brand information. The results remain estimates and can be wrong.
TrueCal Pro's website price is $29.99 a year or $9.99 a month. Eligible customers have a 14-day free trial only in the iPhone or Android app, run by the App Store or Google Play. The TrueCal and MyFitnessPal comparison puts their logging methods together.
