Noom review
Our verdict on paying for the program
Noom Weight makes sense if you want daily lessons and coaching, but we find its price hard to justify for food logging alone. Noom Weight combines daily psychology lessons and green, yellow and orange food categories with coaching chat, at $70 for one month through $209 for twelve months. In our view, most of the reason to pay is the lesson and coaching layer around the log. It suits someone who wants that daily structure and plans to use it.
A day of lessons, meals and color labels
Noom Weight is a behavior-change program. Open Today's Plan on the home screen to find the day's lessons. Then record meals against a personalized calorie target. Reading and logging are both part of the daily routine.
The food colors use calories per gram or milliliter. For solid foods, green means less than 1.0 calorie per gram, yellow means 1.0 to 2.4, and orange means more than 2.4. The rule has exceptions. Diet sodas and artificially sweetened drinks are yellow even when they have 0 calories. These labels describe Noom's system, not a judgment about what you eat.
Photo, voice and typed meal descriptions are available to most users in the US, Canada, Australia and Great Britain on the latest iOS or Android app. You review the ingredients and can adjust them. Barcode scanning is available on eligible app versions, with Noom asking users to update to version 12.10.0 or higher.
Noom says users have AI and human-led coaching through chat. Its cost article also describes weekly coach check-ins. The separately billed one-to-one coach is covered below.
Noom Med and every medication plan are excluded from this review.
The full bill for every plan length
These are the US dollar amounts on Noom's pricing help page, before tax or discounts. The cost per month below is the total divided by the number of months, rounded to cents. It is not a monthly installment.
| Plan length | Paid up front | Calculated cost per month |
|---|---|---|
| 1 month | $70 | $70.00 |
| 2 months | $129 | $64.50 |
| 3 months | $159 | $53.00 |
| 4 months | $169 | $42.25 |
| 5 months | $174 | $34.80 |
| 6 months | $179 | $29.83 |
| 7 months | $184 | $26.29 |
| 8 months | $189 | $23.63 |
| 9 months | $195 | $21.67 |
| 10 months | $199 | $19.90 |
| 11 months | $205 | $18.64 |
| 12 months | $209 | $17.42 |
Plans bill up front and auto-renew. Noom says prices may vary slightly with promotions or signup method. The home page does not show a Noom Weight price before its quiz, but the help page gives the full list.
Using those listed prices, 12 monthly payments of $70 total $840. The 12-month plan is $209. That arithmetic makes the annual plan much cheaper, but it also means paying for the year at once.
The one-to-one coach add-on has its own bill, separate from Noom Weight. Its help page does not publish a price. It offers direct messaging for new US users on iOS or Android, with replies within 24 hours on business days.
Before a trial becomes a charge
Noom's cost article advertises a 7-day trial. Its home page says a free trial is available in most cases. The terms say the first payment is charged immediately after the free trial, without a separate notice that it is about to end or has ended.
A free version of the app is available when you create a free account or when a paid subscription ends. Select lessons, movement tracking and meal logging may be included. Features vary by location and app version, and meal logging specifically depends on location.
Under Noom's refund policy, a refund may be available if requested within 14 days of the first charge. Renewal charges are not refundable. A trial, free app access and a refund request are different things.
What the research can tell a buyer
Noom says it has more than 40 peer-reviewed scientific articles.
Chin and colleagues, 2016
The Scientific Reports study looked back at records from 35,921 Noom Coach users from October 2012 to April 2014. The study found that 77.9% reported a decrease in body weight while using the app, over a median of 267 days. Dinner logging frequency was the strongest factor associated with weight loss. The data came from users' own entries, and there was no comparison group.
Kim and colleagues, 2020
The JMIR mHealth and uHealth trial included 70 women in Korea with BMI above 24. Both groups used Noom Coach and InBody. One group also received daily psychologist-led cognitive behavioral therapy coaching for 8 weeks. The study found mean weight decreases of 3.1% with added coaching and 0.7% without it at 8 weeks. The shares reaching a 5% decrease were 32% and 4%. That difference was found at 8 weeks, but not at 24 weeks. This small, open-label trial tested added psychologist coaching, not Noom against another app. It included only women, and one author was a Noom employee.
Michaelides and colleagues, 2022
The International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health pilot trial assigned 24 people to Noom Weight and 26 to weekly educational newsletters for 4 months. Its main measure was executive function tasks with EEG. The study found a weight decrease of 7.1 pounds in the Noom group and an increase of 1.0 pound in the control group. This was a 50-person pilot, with authors from Noom's academic research team.
McCallum and colleagues, 2026
The Obesity Science and Practice trial assigned 427 adults to a digital program or an educational control, with 217 and 210 people respectively. It ran for 16 weeks with follow-up to 68 weeks. The study found a 1.2% weight decrease in the program group and a 0.6% increase in the control group at 16 weeks. At 68 weeks, the corresponding figures were a 4.1% decrease and a 1.5% increase.
The abstract does not name the program. Noom lists the paper on its research page, but the accessible abstract describes only a commercially available digital weight management program. Full text was not accessible for this review, so that limits what we can verify about the program.
None of these studies tested Noom as a plain food log against other food-log apps.
How the store scores compare
Checked October 3, 2026, the US App Store listing had 4.7 out of 5 from 872,703 ratings. Google Play had 4.1 out of 5 from 314,325 ratings in its page data, displayed as 314K reviews on the listing, with 10M+ downloads.
Subtracting the listed scores gives a difference of 0.6 stars between the stores. Those are store ratings, not a score from TrueCal.
Reasons to choose the lesson program
- Behavioral science lessons give the subscription a clear daily task. Today's Plan puts the reading in a consistent place.
- The color guide teaches calorie density with a label you can recognize in the log.
- Photos, voice and typed descriptions offer different ways to enter a meal in supported countries, with a chance to review ingredients.
- Barcode scanning provides another way to find packaged food on eligible app versions.
- Coaching chat adds support for someone who wants more than a record of meals.
- The help center's price list lets you compare every plan length before taking the quiz.
- The 14-day first-charge refund window gives you a stated period to request a refund, subject to the policy.
Reasons a food-log buyer may pass
- Behavior change and daily lessons with food colors are central to the offer. If you only use the log, much of what you are paying for goes unused.
- Up-front billing means committing money to the chosen term. Automatic renewal continues unless you cancel.
- The trial terms say there is no separate notice before the first post-trial payment.
- Renewals cannot be refunded, unlike a first charge that may qualify.
- Custom meals, recipes and user-entered foods do not show colors. The color guide therefore does not cover everything you can record.
- A one-to-one coach costs extra, and the add-on help page leaves the price unpublished.
- Photo and voice meal entry are limited to most users in four countries, the US, Canada, Australia and Great Britain, on the latest app.
- The free app's features depend on location and app version. Free meal logging is not offered everywhere.
Decide how much of Noom you would use
Consider Noom Weight if reading daily lessons sounds useful, you want a structured program with coaching chat, and you are comfortable paying for months in advance.
Pass if you only want to write down meals, or if an inexpensive month-to-month subscription matters more than lessons. At the listed $70 monthly rate, Noom asks you to place a substantial value on the rest of the program.
Compare the kind of tracking you want
For apps that keep the logging without the lessons, read our Noom alternatives guide.
The Noom and MyFitnessPal comparison helps you compare a daily program with a food diary.
Read Noom beside WeightWatchers if you want to compare the structure of different programs.
TrueCal beside Noom looks at another food-log option. In TrueCal, manual calorie entries are free, while typed descriptions, voice, photos, barcodes and macros require Pro. Pro costs $29.99 a year or $9.99 a month on the TrueCal website. Nutrition results are estimates and can be wrong. Eligible customers can try Pro free for 14 days only in the iPhone or Android app, with the App Store or Google Play running the trial.

Yes. You can create a free account or use the free version after a paid subscription ends. Select lessons, movement tracking and meal logging may be available, depending on location and app version.
