MacroFactor asks questions first and reviews the log weekly

Profile setup begins with guided questions that create a Coached program from the person's goals, needs and preferences. Coached then adjusts calories and macros week by week. Collaborative keeps weekly calorie adjustments but leaves daily calorie and macro choices to the person. Manual leaves all targets to the person, with no weekly budget assigned or adjusted by the app.

A weekly check-in proposes changes for Coached and Collaborative programs. The person chooses the check-in day and can decline the proposed update.

The expenditure estimate uses calorie intake and changes in trend weight. Recommendations respond to those records rather than how closely someone followed the previous target. The help article identifies partial nutrition tracking as a weak point.

Calorie-burn estimates from wearable devices do not enter MacroFactor's expenditure calculation or target adjustments. The MacroFactor review covers the app separately. Other pairings include MacroFactor with MyFitnessPal and MacroFactor with Cronometer.

Lose It recalculates the budget as recorded weight changes

Lose It's help center describes a starting calculation using weight, height, age and sex for basal metabolic rate, then physical activity level and the chosen weekly weight goal. The calorie budget and activity level can be adjusted.

New weight records move the calorie budget down or up with weight. Reaching the goal weight switches the app to a maintenance plan. Its macronutrient calculation article says macro goals do not automatically change with weight, even though the overall calorie budget does.

The separate Lose It review discusses its budget and memberships. The MyFitnessPal and Lose It comparison and Cronometer and Lose It comparison cover two other pairings.

The goals MacroFactor describes

MacroFactor's App Store description lists goals to lose, maintain or gain weight. Its program guide recommends Coached for most users and describes Manual as an option for people following a nutrition coach's calorie and macro recommendations.

The purpose Lose It describes

Lose It's help article says the app is designed for weight loss. It also reports that some people use it for weight gain by adjusting the calorie budget.

TrueCal offers another way to keep a food log

TrueCal includes manual calorie logging on its free plan. Pro turns a typed description, spoken description, photo or barcode into a food log. Macros also require Pro. The TrueCal comparison directory collects more app comparisons.
