NutriComp gave higher energy, carbohydrate and protein values, while Yazio tended to give higher fat values.
Bzikowska-Jura and colleagues, 2021, Nutrients, used two-day records from 60 men and 60 women to compare five apps available in Polish with Dieta 6.0. The authors concluded that none could replace their reference method.
Tosi and colleagues, 2021, Nutrition, evaluated five apps available in Italian, including Yazio and MyFitnessPal, using each for two weeks. The PubMed abstract describes a three-day food diary comparison with a reference method using the Food Composition Database for Epidemiologic Studies in Italy and Bland-Altman plots. Apps tended to underestimate fat and, to a lesser extent, carbohydrate and fiber, except Yazio and Lifesum, which overestimated protein. The authors linked the differences to databases that were not country-specific and user changes to food lists.
Maringer and colleagues, 2019, Public Health Nutrition, scanned 100 products from two Dutch supermarket chains with seven apps, including MyFitnessPal and Yazio. The PubMed abstract describes recording scans as diary entries and comparing product identification and nutrient values. Energy values were available for 99 percent of scanned products, and on average 79 percent of those values were within 5 percent of the true value. Other nutrient values varied greatly between apps.
