Elliptical calorie calculator

By Eric Parker, founder of TrueCal. Updated October 12, 2026.

Thirty minutes on an elliptical at moderate effort is about 170 calories for a 150 pound person. That estimate uses code 02048, Elliptical trainer, moderate effort, at 5.0 MET in the 2024 Adult Compendium of Physical Activities. Calories burned on the elliptical change with effort and body weight, and the vigorous effort entry, code 02049 at 9.0 MET, gives about 306 for the same person and time.

Code 02048 at 5.0 MET for 30 minutes.

Why kilograms and hours enter the formula

Calories equals MET times body weight in kilograms times hours. The definition of 1 MET is 1 kcal per kg per hour on the Compendium unit conversions page, checked October 12, 2026.

Divide pounds by 2.2046 to get kilograms and minutes by 60 to get hours. At 150 pounds, that is 68.04 kilograms. Thirty minutes is 0.5 hours, so 5.0 times 68.04 times 0.5 is about 170 calories. The displayed result is rounded to a whole calorie.

The complete elliptical list has two entries

Only these two descriptions on the Compendium conditioning exercise page, checked October 12, 2026, name an elliptical trainer. Neither code is marked as an estimated value. The page says "Specific Activity Codes in red are estimated MET values. All other values are supported with published literature."

The lowest cell is 68 calories for code 02048 at 120 lb for 15 minutes. The highest is 980 for code 02049 at 240 lb for 60 minutes. With minutes and body weight held equal, 9.0 divided by 5.0 gives 1.8, so the vigorous entry gives 1.8 times the moderate entry before rounding.

At 150 lb, the 30 minute results are 170 and 306, and the 60 minute results are 340 and 612. Within either entry, minutes and body weight each multiply the result in direct proportion.

Machine settings are absent from both descriptions

The descriptions contain the machine name and an effort word. They state no resistance level, stride length or incline setting, which leaves no input for those settings in this calculator. Moderate and vigorous are not defined for an elliptical beyond those words.

This page does not cover how any machine's own calorie display is worked out.

Rowing machine02074Rowing, stationary, ≥ 200 watts, very vigorous effort14.0
Stair machine02065Stair treadmill ergometer, general9.3

At 5.0 MET, elliptical moderate effort equals the listed MET for rowing code 02071. Elliptical vigorous effort at 9.0 MET sits below the stair treadmill entry at 9.3, above rowing codes 02070 at 7.3 and 02072 at 7.5, and below codes 02073 at 11.0 and 02074 at 14.0. The rowing entries above 02071 state watts. The elliptical descriptions do not. Both of those machines have their own calculator, the stair climber calculator for StairMaster sessions and real stairs and the rowing machine calculator by watts and effort.

The conditioning exercise page has no stationary bike entry pedalled with the legs. Its stationary bicycle entry, code 02119, is an upper body, arms only entry and is left out here. Stationary bicycling appears on the Compendium bicycling page, checked October 12, 2026. Those entries are used by the cycling calculator for stationary and outdoor rides.

Precision the Compendium does not claim

The Compendium corrected METs page, checked October 12, 2026, says "The Compendium was not developed to determine the precise energy cost of activities within an individual."

It also says "However, the Compendium is frequently used outside of its original scope." and "It does not correct the MET levels for age, body mass, and sex."

Find the calculation for a different activity

The treadmill calculator with walking, running and incline entries covers that machine. There are also estimates for running by pace and time, swimming by stroke and jump rope by pace.

Resistance training entries share the conditioning exercise page and are used in the lifting weights calorie calculator. For a daily energy estimate, there is the total daily energy expenditure calculator.

Answers about elliptical effort and time

How many calories does the elliptical burn?

For 150 pounds, moderate effort code 02048 gives about 170 calories for 30 minutes and 340 for 60 minutes. Vigorous effort code 02049 gives about 306 calories for 30 minutes and 612 for 60 minutes.

Does resistance or incline change this calculator?

Neither elliptical description states a resistance level or incline setting. Those settings are not inputs in this calculator.

What do the two elliptical effort choices mean?

The Compendium names moderate effort in code 02048 and vigorous effort in code 02049. It gives no further definition of those effort words for an elliptical.
