Calories burned jumping rope

By Eric Parker, founder of TrueCal. Updated October 9, 2026.

Jumping rope gives about 143 calories at 160 pounds for 10 minutes with entry 15551, Rope jumping, moderate pace, general, 100 to 120 skips/min, 2 foot skip, plain bounce, at 11.8 MET. The number changes with skipping pace and body weight.

Jump rope calorie calculator

Weight unit
Estimated calories143

This estimate applies the Compendium formula to the selected rope jumping entry.

The calculation for skipping

calories = MET x body weight in kilograms x hours

The Compendium unit definitions give 1 MET = 1 kcal/kg/hr and 1 kg = 2.2046 lb. To use pounds and minutes, divide the pounds by 2.2046 and the minutes by 60, then multiply both by the entry's MET.

For the moderate pace example, 160 pounds converts to about 72.58 kilograms and 10 minutes is 1/6 hour. The calculation is 11.8 x 72.58 x 10/60 = 142.7, or about 143 calories. Only the final calorie figure is rounded by the calculator.

Four rope jumping entries

The 2024 Adult Compendium sports list, checked October 9, 2026, supplies these exact descriptions and MET values.

Calories for 100 and 1,000 skips

A skip count becomes a time range when an entry states both ends of its skipping rate. Minutes = skips divided by the entry's stated rate. For entry 15550 at 160 pounds, 1,000 skips at 120 a minute = 8.33 minutes, and 12.3 x 72.58 x 8.33/60 = 124 calories.

Estimated calorie ranges from stated skip rates
CodeSkips130 lb160 lb190 lb220 lb
155501008 to 109 to 1211 to 1513 to 17
155501,00076 to 10193 to 124110 to 147128 to 170

155511,00097 to 116119 to 143141 to 169164 to 196

Entry 15552 states only an upper limit on its rate and entry 15554 states no rate, so neither has a skip count row.

What these MET estimates leave out

The Compendium was not designed to give the precise energy cost of an activity for an individual. Its standard METs do not correct for age, body mass or sex.

In its explanation of corrected METs, the Compendium reports Kozey et al.'s finding that standard METs misclassify the intensity category 12.2% of the time compared with measured MET values. Misclassification was greater for people who were overweight, older, low fit, or women.

Direct measurement of resting metabolic rate or energy expenditure is not replaced by either standard or corrected METs. Both still have error and misclassification. The adult version of the Compendium covers ages 19-59.

Calculations beyond the rope

For resistance exercise, see calories burned lifting weights. The sit-up calorie page addresses that movement separately.

A ride can be entered in the cycling calorie calculator, while the swimming calorie calculator covers pool activity.

Walking can be explored by distance in calories burned walking a mile or by count in the steps to calories calculator. For a daily energy estimate, open the TDEE calculator.

Jump rope numbers explained

How does the formula count 10 minutes of moderate skipping?

At 160 pounds, moderate pace entry 15551 uses 11.8 MET and gives about 143 calories for 10 minutes.

What does 1,000 skips give at a fast pace?

For 160 pounds, entry 15550 gives an estimated 93 to 124 calories for 1,000 skips. Its stated range of 120 to 160 skips per minute changes the time in the formula.

Can double unders be calculated from a skip count?

Entry 15554 lists 10.0 MET but no skip rate. The calculator uses minutes for this entry, and the skips table leaves it out.
