Active calories vs total calories
Total calories are resting calories plus active calories.
Active calories are the calories counted by Apple's red Move ring. Resting calories come from the energy used at rest for vital functions such as breathing, blood circulation and heartbeat, which Fitbit describes as basal metabolic rate, or BMR. Total calories are the full day's calories burned, the number Fitbit says appears on its device.
For a man aged 40, at 180 cm and 85 kg, an example full day is resting 1,780 + active 600 = total 2,380 calories. For a 45-minute workout, active 300 + resting 56 = total 356 calories. His resting share is 1,780 / 1,440 x 45, rounded to 56 calories. These are examples worked from the printed equation with example active inputs, not readings from any device.
Calculate the missing calorie number
Two of three finds a missing number from active, resting and total calories for the same period. Estimate resting uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation for a full day and adds the watch's active calories.
Active calorie estimate 600
Resting calorie estimate 1,780
Total calorie estimate 2,380
Results are rounded to whole calories after the calculation.
The resting equation behind the estimate
Men
10 x weight (kg) + 6.25 x height (cm) - 5 x age (y) + 5
Women
10 x weight (kg) + 6.25 x height (cm) - 5 x age (y) - 161
These Mifflin-St Jeor equations estimate daily resting energy expenditure. Mifflin MD, St Jeor ST, et al. Am J Clin Nutr 1990, checked October 10, 2026.
The unit conversions are 1 in = 2.54 cm and 1 kg = 2.2046 lb.
Four example days with different active inputs
Resting estimates come from the equation. Active calories are example inputs. Each total estimate adds the unrounded resting result and the active input, then rounds to whole calories.
| Person | Age in years | Height in cm | Weight in kg | Resting estimate | Active example input | Total estimate |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Woman | 35 | 165 | 65 | 1,345 | 250 | 1,595 |
| Man | 40 | 180 | 85 | 1,780 | 600 | 2,380 |
| Woman | 60 | 160 | 70 | 1,239 | 400 | 1,639 |
| Man | 25 | 175 | 70 | 1,674 | 900 | 2,574 |
What Apple and Fitbit count
Apple Watch and iPhone
The Apple Watch Move ring counts active calories. The Trends area in the Fitness app on iPhone shows daily trend data for active calories. Apple Watch workout history shows total calories burned alongside workout time and average heart rate. Apple's daily activity guide, checked October 10, 2026.
An iPhone carried alone uses motion sensors to track steps, distance and flights climbed to estimate active calories. Apple's iPhone activity summary guide, checked October 10, 2026.
Apple Watch uses personal information including height, weight, gender and age to calculate calories. Apple's measurement guide, checked October 10, 2026.
Fitbit's daily number
Fitbit combines BMR and activity data to estimate calories burned. The number on the device is the total for the day. Fitbit says BMR accounts for at least half the calories burned in a day. Because the body burns calories during sleep, the device already shows calories on waking and the number rises through the day. Fitbit's daily activity explanation, checked October 10, 2026.
For separate activity calculations, the steps to calories calculator covers a step count, and the lifting calorie calculator covers a lifting session.
Put total calories beside TDEE
TDEE is a total daily energy estimate, so the comparable watch number is total calories rather than active calories. The explanation of TDEE covers what that daily total means.
In the TDEE calculator, Lightly active uses a multiplier of 1.375. For the example man, resting 1,780 x 1.375 = 2,448 calories as a rounded TDEE estimate. His example watch day total of 2,380 is the number to set beside it, not his 600 active calories.
The calorie deficit calculator is another calculation that starts with TDEE.
Reading a watch estimate
The studies on calorie accuracy are covered in how accurate Apple Watch is.
Food logging in TrueCal
On iPhone, Android and the web, TrueCal offers free manual calorie logging. Pro includes logging from a typed description, voice, a photo or a barcode, plus protein, carbs and fat.
Questions about the calorie split
Does the Move ring show total calories?
Apple says the red Move ring shows active calories. Resting calories are a separate part of the total.
Why does Fitbit show calories when I wake up?
Fitbit includes BMR in its calorie estimate. BMR describes calories burned at rest for vital body functions, so the device already shows calories on waking.
Can I find resting calories from active and total?
Subtract active calories from total calories for the same period. This calculator labels the result as an estimate.
